Top Ten Best/Worst Movie Adaptations

I'm actually quite impressed by the amount of positivity I've got going on in this post. I was expecting to be ranting about a bunch of shitty movies, but I've picked out quite a few awesome ones. Read on, my lovelies.

Best
1. Beautiful Creatures
No, I'm not being sarcastic. The screenwriter(s) and director took a long and totally dull book, and turned it into something I could watch and make fun of. That's a good thing.

2. Jurassic Park
I freakin' love the movie. It's one of my all time favourites, next to The Land Before Time (anyone see a theme?), and when I finally read the book after so many years of watching the movie on repeat, I was totally impressed. LOVE. IT.

3. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
I was a bit disappointed by The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, but I watched this when it came out and I thought it was great. I could definitely rewatch this one over and over again.

4. Bridget Jones' Diary
This one's kind of like my Beautiful Creatures mention. I'm not a fan of the book (at all), but I love the movie. Something about it just draws me in.

5. The Lion King
Shut up, this is basically Hamlet, it definitely counts.

6. Watership Down
I cry over the book, and I sob over the movie. I used to watch this all the time when I was younger, and looking back I have to question my mother's parenting. This movie is traumatising.

7. The Secret Garden
I love love love this book. It's one of the few classics that I have read and adored. The movie is also pretty great, although nothing matches up to the novel.

Bit of Both
1. Harry Potter
I like the movies, sure, but they're awful if you compare them to the books. But whatever, I still watch them and cry over them. Although I don't think I've ever watched The Goblet of Fire all the way through, which is weird since it's my favourite book in the series.

Worst
1. Northern Lights
Not only did they change the name (I refuse to call it The Golden Compass), they also took away all the magic of the book. I still haven't managed to finish this one.

2. Twilight
To be fair, there wasn't much they could do with the source material, but what they did manage to do was to take a stupid book, and make it even more stupid and dull and cheesy. Sigh.

  1. Haha, I definitely expected more snark from you xD I can't believe you put Beautiful Creatures on the best list though xDDD

I have seen shamefully few of these. *hides*

  2. I loved the Prince Caspian movie, but I was soooooo distracted by Caspian's accent.

    Perfect summation of Twilight. Lol.

    Here's my top ten!

  3. I agree about Harry Potter. I love the movies, because it's Harry Potter, but some of them aren't that good. And your thoughts about Twilight are spot on. I hate the books, but the movies are even worse.

  5. I loved the Harry Potter movies, but I can see that they're definitely flawed!

  6. The Golden Compass was a terrible film of an amazing book (that is called Northern Lights - definitely agree with you on the annoying-ness of that name change). Love the inclusion of The Lion King and Jurassic Park. Classics of our time!

  8. JURASSIC PARK!!!! I have yet to read the books but I have an utter obsession with the movies...I have seen all three and it may be the cause of my obsession with dinosaurs... Did you know that there is going to be a fourth movie!!!!!!! Me and Zoe from bookhi are planning to do a live tweeting session as we watch Jurassic Park. It's this weekend hopefully so watch out!!!

  10. I love the Bridget Jones movies too! I think I enjoyed the books, but I don't remember much about them. I definitely prefer the movies. I totally agree with you on The Golden Compass. I only managed to get half an hour through it. IT WAS TERRIBLE. Plus the name changed should never have happened. It completely put me off it. And YAY for Jurassic Park! I still need to read the books but I love the movies! Because... DINOSAURS!

  11. I really enjoyed Beautiful Creatures, the book dragged a bit but I thought the film was pretty cute, better than I expected. I know its not cool but I enjoy the Twilight films, I hated Breaking Dawn the book with a passion but I actually like the films.

  13. I LOVE The Secret Garden too! I watched that so many times as a kid. I also agree that Prince Caspian was much better than The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. There were a few awful additions to the story (I am SO not here for a Susan/Caspian romance) but overall I really like it. I also really like the Watership Down movie. You are SO right when you say it's scarring, but it's still fantastic. :)
