Lillia has never had any problems dealing with boys who like her. Not until this summer, when one went too far. No way will she let the same thing happen to her little sister.
Kat is tired of the rumours, the insults, the cruel jokes. It all goes back to one person– her ex-best friend– and she's ready to make her pay.
Four years ago, Mary left Jar Island because of a boy. But she's not the same girl anymore. And she's ready to prove it to him.
Three very different girls who want the same thing: sweet, sweet revenge. And they won't stop until they each had a taste. - Goodreads
Burn for Burn was a fantastic read, filled with juicy revenge, mysterious and emotional back-stories, and three brilliant characters. I loved all three of the mains, as well as most of the secondary characters, because they were mostly all fantastic too, in their own little way.
Let's talk about the main trio first. Lillia is the popular one. She is rich, she's pretty, she's got a bunch of friends, she's a cheerleader. She seemingly has it all. Kat is the badass who used to be friends with Lillia and Rennie. And then there's Mary, who is kinda sweet, and also a complete mystery for most of the book.
I really liked all three of them, and honestly I was expecting to have an absolute favourite and then not be as interested in the other two as much. However, I loved all three! If you want to force me to pick a favourite, then I would say Lillia by a short margin, although that is only because she was right in the middle of everything.
The secondary characters were also fantastic. I really liked the way that Vivian and Han included them in the story and gave them all their own personality, otherwise the revenge would have seemed cheap. I grew to care about Alex and I kind of love Reeve. I'm not a fan of Rennie, but seriously, who would be? She's the Regina George of the book, so she was an awesome character, but her personality left a lot to be desired.
Can I talk about Lillia and Reeve for a moment? I feel like I need to because I was shipping them SO. HARD. They don't even have many scenes, and they're not a couple or anything, so why did I ship them, you ask? Because CHEMISTRY. I ignored the fact that Reeve acts like a complete arse. I need to talk with someone about these two because I have spoilery things to discuss!
I also need to discuss Mary with someone because... Well, some stuff was happening throughout the book and I'm not sure what to think of it. So if you've read the book that you should send me a tweet, because I would really like to throw around some theories!
I loved the way the girls went about their revenge. It was fantastic! Not the act of revenge itself, but all the planning and scheming, as well as how much Kat and Lillia started to care about Mary, the new girl. It was adorable, and pretty cool!
The setting was also fantastic. It's set at the start of the school term, which means that the weather is still hot to fairly decent. Hot compared to England, anyway. I felt like I was on the island with the girls as they were planning their next move and going to the homecoming dance.
I'm so happy that Burn for Burn is the first book in a trilogy, because I cannot wait to see more of these characters! And I need to know whether or not Reeve and Lillia is going to be a legit thing. I am crossing my fingers.
So excited for this one! Great review glad to hear you liked it :D
ReplyDeleteSo glad you liked it so much. I always love it when I end up liking all the main characters and not just one.. my sister read this book so if you want to discuss you should definitely tweet her!
ReplyDeleteAs for this Reeve dude, I must read the book to see what is up with that. I sometimes ship the wrong couple or two people that are never going to end up together so I totally know what you mean.
great review,

I agree with everything you say! I love the location and the revenge! And there's SO much I need to know about Mary. I'm mostly still reeling from the last lines of the book - even though I read it months ago. I love this review!
ReplyDeleteSounds like you either need a buddy or join a Burn forum. I wish I were more of a fangirl so I could talk to people about books and stuff. I'm the quiet, passive type.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you liked this, Amber! I would need to start it sooner rather than later! I love it when a book has strong secondary characters! Thanks for a great review! :)
ReplyDeleteI think this sounds so good. I really hope I can find it soon. Great review.
