Top Ten Books I Thought I'd Like More or Less Than I Did

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.
More
- Taken by Erin Bowman. The cover reeled me in and I was SO. EXCITED. for this. I got a review copy and I was going to pre-order the hardcover as well because that's how excited I was. But rather than love it, I got seriously pissed off with the main protagonist (he's an abusive ass) and the plot was generic.

- City of a Thousand Dolls by Miriam Forster. Again, I was soooooo excited. I thought this was going to be a great YA fantasy, and YA needs more of those. It was good, and I enjoyed it, but it wasn't amazing. The best thing about the book was my cat/human ship.

- Feedback by Robison Wells. UGH. UGHHHHHH. I am so annoyed with the way this one ended. What even was that. I loved Variant, so I was expecting great things. Instead Wells took my expectations and stomped on them.

Less
- Altered by Jennifer Rush. This was a totally random read for me. I was in between review books, and I thought I'd pick up a random debut from my friend's reading pile. I had no idea what this was about as I started reading it, and I freakin' adored it! It's one of my two favourite reads of the year so far.

- Variant by Robison Wells. Daph had told me over and over about how great this book was and I didn't believe her. Well, I believed her that it was great, but I didn't think I'd love it as much as I did. I loved the mystery, the characters, the twists... Everything!
More
- The Last Werewolf by Glen Duncan. It was...not what I expected, and not in a good way. Definitely not the book for me.

- Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. I EXPECTED AN EPIC ROMANCE AND A FABULOUS FEMALE CHARACTER A LA SCARLETT O'HARA. INSTEAD I GOT AN INCREDIBLY FICKLE WOMAN AND A POMPOUS DICK OF A ROMANTIC INTEREST.

- Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. Lol wtf was this? I had high hopes for it being a creepy, unsettling book full of intriguing characters but that didn't happen because of the lazy execution of what could have been a great story.

Less
- The Knife of Letting Go by Patrick Ness. THIS SERIES HAS RUINED MY GODDAMN LIFE. IT IS ON MY LIST OF MOST TRAUMATIC/STRESSFUL BOOKS I'VE EVER READ.

- Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. An impulse buy that worked out great :D

  4. Same for me with Altered! Oh and Taken? Wtf. Everyone among my blogging/GR friends hate it with passion. Frustrating since that cover *drools* is sooooo pretty.

  5. Miss Peregrine's wasn't what I was expecting either. It looked creepy but it was more about a different story. I still found it interesting. Love the variety in your list! :)

  6. Great list. Altered was really good, but I haven't read the rest of them. I did have high hopes for Taken, but from the reviews so far, not so much anymore. :D

  10. Agh! People keep saying how disappointed they were by City of a Thousand Dolls. I was REALLY looking forward to it, but now I'm nervous. Ahh. Knowing me, I'll probably love it just to be different. Of course.

I actually liked Variant and Feedback about the same, though with the way book 2 ended, I think it should have been a trilogy or something. Did not feel complete for me.

    LOL @ Anna Karenina!

@ Knife of Never Letting Go: uh boy! I'm picking this up from the library this afternoon. This should be interesting...

  17. I keep hearing absolutely amazing htings about The Knife of Never Letting go. I picked it up once at hte store and the writing looked like I would hate it because it was so all over the place. But i really think i might have to try it because of the amazing reviews it keeps getting.

  18. I am LOLing at how much that description of Anna Karenina sounds like Gone with the Wind to me.

Also, Amber, I am with you on Taken, but I actually didn't like either of the books that surprised you all that much. Though I MIGHT maybe read Altered's sequel if she gets with the grumpy one, Nick (I think?).

  19. That gif is excellent- I saw it paired up with a scene from the third Star Wars film on tumblr not so long ago; quite hilarious.
I haven't actually read any of these, but I'm very keen to read Anna Karenina, so I'm sorry to hear you disliked it! If you see the film, hopefully it'll make up for it! It looks beautiful. (:

  20. Amber: I'm so disappointed by all the Taken negativity because I love the colors on the cover. And I also LOVED Altered! So glad you recommended it to me :)

Tatum: I just ordered The Knife of Never Letting Go and I'm so happy to see that you loved it! Now I'm even more excited to read it!!
