Alenna is being hunted. She can run and hide. Or she can stand and fight. Alenna is being chased by the government that destroyed her life. Determined to strike back, she joins the uprising. But victory has a high price. Will she risk everything and return to the Wheel? Or will she leave Liam, the boy she loves, to his fate? Battered. Bloodied. Defiant. Alenna's fight for survival continues.
I sit in an uncomfortable metal chair, facing a row of six scientists in white lab coats. These are my inquisitors.

The romance in this book ruined it for me. I was so excited to see Alenna and co. start to fight back against the oppressive government who sent them to the island in the first place. I mean, this is called The UPRISING, after all. However, not much happened in this book aside from the constant "I love you"'s and "I don't want you to get hurt"'s, much to the disgust of everyone involved. The Forsaken was a book that I really enjoyed, despite the insta-love. It was one of the few occasions where I managed to tune the romance out and focus on the story and the characters, and I loved that. With The Uprising, Stasse amps up the romance to a whole new level, and there is no getting away from it.
Liam turned into an overbearing ass. In almost every scene he was telling Alenna what she could and couldn't do, claiming to be trying to protect her so he wouldn't lose her. Excuse you, mate, Alenna did just fine after you got yourself caught and frozen in The Forsaken. Watch what you're saying. Alenna would tell him that she could handle the things that were thrown at her, which I appreciated. Or, rather, I would have appreciated if they didn't have the same conversation over and over again.
I honestly cannot tell you want went on in this book aside from the characters reaffirming their love for one another every thirty pages. I ended up skim reading after the first one hundred and fifty pages, because I couldn't take it any longer. I'm sure the plot would have been interesting, if it would have ever got going.
There was little development in any aspect of this novel. The romance, the characters, and the storyline all fell flat. I know as much about this world as I did at the end of The Forsaken.
The Uprising honestly feels like a stupid self-insert fanfic that a thirteen year old wrote to pass the time in the summer holidays. It was a bitter disappointment, and I definitely will not be continuing with this series for fear of getting slapped in the face with more insta-love and ridiculous scenes.
So disappointed to hear the romance keeps getting in the way of the book. I liked The Forsaken, but I too hated the romance. I thought it brought insta-love to a whole new level. They basically had two conversations and were in love. Ugh. I was planning on reading this one, but maybe now I won't (it's on order at the library). Thanks for the honest review! ~Pam
ReplyDeleteHaha. I'm probably made of a tiny bit of evil since I love your negative reviews. They always make me smile and laugh and feel good that someone else isn't enjoying what they're reading. Though, lately I've picked up books that I know I would probably enjoy and not experiment that much. However, I haven't read The Forsaken yet, but I want to. It's just too bad that you didn't like this one at all O.o I get where you're coming from. My last review deals with basically the same issue and it's just.. too fucking much. Like.. there is a romance genre, alright? Cut this jazz and get on with the plot already. Or, better yet, write a novella so people can see them kissing and arguing and making up etc and then write the sequel with the awesome world and characters you started with. It's not like these characters seemed to have grown based on your thoughts. Ehh.. I'll just wait for the third one and see what I'll do. Thanks for your thoughts, Amber!
